F1 2023 Insider's Guide No. 22 – Las Vegas - GLOBE-TROTTER

The Las Vegas Grand Prix mixes the glamour of Formula One with the kitschness of the Strip as partying and engineering clash together in spectacular style. The popularity of the new street circuit shows how far F1 has come in wooing America - a country that was somewhat cool towards its charms only a few years ago and besotted with homegrown IndyCar racing. Netflix’s Drive To Survive has helped to change all that and this will be a huge event. Vegas last hosted a Grand Prix more than 40 years ago, but now F1 is back with a bang and the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team will be looking to round off the season with points here and in the final race at Abu Dhabi.

Where can you hit the links?

The famous Wynn Hotel Golf Course and F1 package – The Wynn Resort boasts one of Vegas’ biggest golf courses with some of the city’s most sought-after greens. So play a round after the race - and don’t miss some of the special F1 packages the hotel has put together for race day that include food and drinks as well as track views.

What if you want to enjoy the power of nature?

Head to Zion National Park – The default for Vegas visitors in search of natural majesty is to head for The Grand Canyon. Let us politely suggest an alternative: Zion National Park. Cross into Utah and you will be rewarded with a park whose sheer cliffs and dramatic valleys will make your hair stand on end. Look out for circling condors as you traverse some of America’s most thrilling hikes. Daredevils won’t want to miss the infamous Angel’s Landing.

How can you enjoy the best of nearby Los Angeles?

Head to LA for sophisticated thrills –  Don’t miss out on LA - that frustrating, fascinating, fantastic town where everyone wants to make it. Hike Griffin Park to the Hollywood sign for an incredible view. Sleep options like The London, 1 West Hollywood, Wayfarer, Mama, The Millennium Biltmore, Conrad, Figueroa and the Fairmont Beverly Hills are some of the picks of the places to stay in LA. Dining options are fantastic and you can hit the beach and have a seaside stay at the Inn at Playa del Rey.

What if you mix modern architecture with the outdoors?

Visit Palm Springs and Joshua Tree – The quirky modernist architecture of Palm Springs (don’t miss the collection of mid-century banks and Elvis’ holiday house) mixes wonderfully with the desert loneliness of Joshua Tree National Park. There’s a distinctly kitsch, cool factor at play here in hotels like The Twist, Ace, and the La Quinta, a homely resort complete with Mexican overtones and a golf course.

What is everyone in Vegas talking about?

The Sphere at the Venetian – Every Vegas conversation at the moment comes back to this one tenet: have you experienced the Sphere and what did you think? U2’s residency is just the start: numerous acts are set to make the most of the incredible visual possibilities of the interior and exterior of Vegas’ newest venue. It’s right by the Venetian which is the perfect place to stay after you’ve seen a show in style here.

Where is a great place to eat?

Virgin Resort – Casa Calavera dishes up the greatest Mexican food while health-conscious travellers might want to recharge with a smoothie at the juice bar. Funny Library offers bakery delights and snacks to go with your morning coffee. And Kassi Beach House has all the Italian food you’ll need. Still hungry? Modern American for dinner at the Kitchen at Commons Club is the order of the day - or a steak at ONE Steakhouse. There’s Night + Market for Thai and even a Nobu. Pizza Forte slings slices while Afters has your gelato needs sewn up. Phew.

How can you get some much needed sleep in Las Vegas?

Westin –  After a long day and night on the tiles or at the track, the Westin is perfectly placed steps from the Strip to get you a good night’s sleep. Dine at The Good Plate, get a treatment at the Hibiscus Spa or head up to the roof to enjoy the desert sunshine at the Rooftop Pool and bar. Additionally you’ll find yourself a short walk from the race circuit itself - so listen out for the roar from the 1,000bhp F1 cars.
