Sometimes a product is so popular and distinctive that it almost comes to symbolise the brand itself. For Omega, it’s the astronaut-approved Speedmaster timepiece. For Christian Louboutin, there is no mistaking the brand’s black patent Pigalle pumps with signature red sole. And for Globe-Trotter, it’s the Safari suitcase.
Part of the wider Safari collection, this suitcase has been a Globe-Trotter favourite for nearly two decades. Unsurprisingly, the coffee brown colour and light khaki lining take inspiration from African safaris and the spirit of adventure that underlines every Globe Trotter suitcase. The style evokes Britain’s era of exploration in the 1920s and is a sartorial nod to the stylish explorers of this period — but updated for the modern, discerning traveller.
The rich Coffee Brown hue with contrasting Natural non-dyed leather corners and straps is safari-chic without going full crocodile hunter. The Ivory colourway dates back, suitably, to the late 1920s, but the style was updated in 2001 as part of the core collection suitcase models, which introduced the distinctive strap detailing. Safari swiftly became one of Globe-Trotter’s bestsellers, and remains one of the brand’s most iconic and recognisable today.
A comprehensive collection
While the suitcase is the poster boy of the Safari collection, the range is one of Globe-Trotter’s most comprehensive. Both colourways are available in the petite 18” suitcase right up to the long-haul 30” extra deep suitcase. It also includes an attractive attache, a vanity case, the London Square handbag and even a special edition watch case and jewellery holder.
Timeless style
Colour trends come and go — but Safari’s rich coffee colour and pared-back simplicity is eminently understated and elegant. The collection is suitable for every travel occasion — from a city break to a far-flung Kenyan safari — and only gets better with use and age.
“I think the popularity of the Safari collection has something to do with its timeless colours and the muted tones of the natural leather trim, which is unique to the Safari collection,” says Globe-Trotter designer, Charlotte Seddon. “The leather is light in colour at first, but darkens over time and usage, which I think gives each case its own character. The Ivory cases in particular show many scuffs from your travels, which is a lovely way to remind you of all your adventures.”
